Schema Therapy

Schema therapy is a type of therapy that targets schemas, a term used clinically to describe maladaptive patterns of thinking. Schemas are thought to develop during childhood and in adulthood, these schemas are thought to influence an individual’s thoughts and actions in negative ways leading to unhealthy behaviours that can negatively affect relationships and emotional well-being. Schema therapy combines elements of other therapies and was originally developed to treat personality disorders and is often used to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD) in particular. Schema therapy has also been used to treat eating disorders, anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns, especially those that appear unresponsive to other forms of treatment.
